Education
Hi, my name is Mike. I'm sorry there's no photo! I can't upload it for some reason. I have a photo here https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-mackenna-37330729/ I graduated from the University of Colorado in 2004, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. I never earned a grade below a B in an English class, and I picked up A's in seven different English classes during my time there. In 2010, I completed my Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Grand Canyon University. My Master's GPA was almost perfect, 3.96/4.0. After earning my Master's, I obtained a teaching certification in English Language Arts from the State of New Jersey, and completed official IB training courses in MYP English Language and Literature, DP English Language and Literature (twice: one course for the 2015 curriculum, and another course for the new 2021 curriculum), and DP Extended Essay.
Experience
I'm here to help you succeed in the IB! I'm now in my 6th year of teaching IBDP, and my 12th year of teaching in total. I am currently the Head of the Secondary English Department and the Extended Essay Coordinator, and I teach English Language and Literature, English B, and Theory of Knowledge. In terms of my tutoring approach, I am very much focused on helping students with whatever they need help with, and in whatever way they need help. That's why my first two questions for my students are always some variation on: "What do you want to work on, and how do you want to work on it?" And if a student doesn't know how to answer those questions, I have plenty of suggestions that will help them find the answer. I love tutoring because students learn so much from it. One-on-one teaching is the best way to help students develop or improve their knowledge and skills, which is why I constantly offer students at my school lunchtime and after-school tutoring. Please contact me, then, if you want to succeed in IB English, TOK or Extended Essay. I would love to help you!

Hobbies
I'm an English teacher, so of course I'm an obsessive reader. I read several different books at a time, in English and in Spanish, for 10 minutes a day each. Sounds strange, I know, but it works for me! A few books I've read recently, or am reading now: KIndred, The Vegetarian, Simon Bolivar; A Life, How to Raise an Adult (I have a three year old son), The Sound of Things Falling, Born a Crime, That Which Has No Name, Memories of the Thousand Days War, and Educated, I'm also kind of a news junkie, so I read The Economist, The Atlantic, Semana Magazine and El Espectador (those last two are Spanish-language sources from my adopted home of Bogotá, Colombia). Once upon a time I was a more-or-less competent athlete, and loved to play basketball, baseball, and American football, but those days are long over.
